Eat the Rainbow for Good Health

As part of National Nutritional Month, FitMed Partners wants to remind our patients that good nutrition starts with the smart food choices at the grocery store.

Dr. McConnell gives patients key tips to remember when filling up your cart.  He states, “Eat the rainbow.  The brighter the color of fruits and vegetables, the better the food is for your body.”

Other tips include writing a grocery list before shopping and shopping the perimeter of the store.  Dr. McConnell says the perimeter of the store is key because “That is where the fresh fruit and vegetables, the fish and dairy options are located.  Not many processed foods are around the perimeter of the grocery store, they are all sandwiched in the middle.”  In addition, he advises not to grocery shop while hungry.  He states, “Your hunger takes over and the healthy choices usually get left behind at the store.”

Eat the Rainbow Tips!

Red – Red foods like apples and peppers promote a healthy heart and are high in fiber

Orange- Go straight to the oranges.  They are good for bone strength and supports hemoglobin production

Yellow- Think squash and pineapple when writing the grocery list.  They help build the immune system and support good vision

Green foods- Vegetables that are green and leafy are the best.  They help to promote overall good health.

Blue- Blueberries and eggplants are good examples.  These help with memory and have excellent anti-aging properties.

Violet-Grab eggplant and grapes at the store.    They contain anti-oxidants that lower cholesterol and blood pressure.
