Health and weight loss go hand in hand

As you may have guessed, at our facility the words "healthy" and "weight" are closely linked. While weight loss is the initial goal for many of our clients, the long term health benefits, renewed energy, and increased self-esteem associated with their weight loss quickly become the primary motivators. Numerous studies show that a healthy weight and physical fitness are two of the strongest factors in the prevention of disease and premature aging. And over time, we've learned that a natural, healthy approach to weight loss yields the best results.

Lose weight to increase your longevity and health

According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, people suffering from obesity have a 10% to 50% increased risk of death compared to individuals at a healthy weight. (Anti-aging enthusiasts, take note!)

Research shows that even a modest amount of weight loss (just 10% of body weight) can help overweight or obese people lower their risk of developing many health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, osteoarthritis, gall bladder disease, some cancers, and breathing problems such as asthma and sleep apnea.

Weight loss and weight management made simple

How weight management can work for you

We know weight loss can be difficult

Our team understands (sometimes from personal experience) how difficult weight loss can be... and how hard it can be to sustain weight loss over time. That's one reason we take a comprehensive approach to weight loss that goes beyond diets and weekly meetings.

Starting down the road to permanent weight loss

We'll begin your weight loss program by conducting extensive testing from our Charleston, SC weight loss center to assess your overall health status and current weight, fitness level, and body composition. First, you'll be guided through our comprehensive weight management profile, which includes a full work-up of your nutritional and exercise status with a registered dietitian and exercise physiologist; comprehensive exercise testing with physician supervision; and advanced DXA body composition testing. As part of this preliminary profile, you’ll spend a full hour with our physician.

We'll use the resulting information to create a personalized weight loss and management plan for you as an individual so you can take the weight off and keep it off naturally and safely while maintaining excellent nutrition.

To increase your chances for success even further, you can enjoy individual nutritional counseling and follow-up with a registered FitMed dietitian to personally help you achieve the healthy results you want.

FitMed Partners and the HMR® Advantage

For those seeking to attain a healthier body weight, we utilize the HMR at Home® weight management program with home diet options using portion-controlled food, food journaling, and optional weekly support. HMR (Health Management Resources) is a weight loss and weight management leader, offering the number one program for medically supervised weight loss used by physicians in major medical centers throughout the United States.

HMR has the best published weight loss data of any ongoing weight loss program. Our founding physician and registered dieticians are specifically trained and experienced in this weight loss program and will oversee your individual weight loss and maintenance over time to personally help you achieve optimum results.

How successful is HMR at Home®?
HMR offers higher weight loss success than any other ongoing weight loss experts, based on published weight loss results. Weight loss participants using HMR at Home lose an average of 15 to 30 pounds. HMR participants also typically see their blood pressure, blood sugar, and blood lipid levels decrease.

Is this diet affordable?
Total food cost for this weight loss program is approximately $13 per day. Many weight loss participants report that they actually save money on this diet.

How does meal replacement dieting affect weight loss?
More than 60 health and medical references report that meal replacements result in significantly greater weight loss and weight loss maintenance. Those using meal replacements lost an average of three times as much weight compared to those on traditional diets. In fact, not a single study has found that non-meal replacement diets exceed the performance of meal replacement diets. Meal replacement provides structure, cuts down on the number of choices and decisions a person has to make, and provides excellent nutrition. Participants typically see immediate results, too, which is highly predictive of longer term success.

How long do patients typically stay on the HMR program?
The average length of participation in the weight loss phase of the program is nine weeks.

How important is phone support to weight loss success?
While it's not required, FitMed highly recommends you participate in phone support because it is proven to increase success in weight loss. A University of Kansas study that compared two self-directed weight loss programs over 12 weeks found that those who engaged in weekly ten-minute phone calls lost 41 percent more than those who did not engage in weekly phone support.

How successful are HMR participants in maintaining lost weight?
HMR participants are among the most successful in maintaining their weight, based on published studies on weight maintenance.

Measuring weight loss success beyond weigh-ins

We'll use the most up-to-date medical and clinical approaches to create a truly personalized weight management plan for you. First, we'll measure your actual resting metabolic rate (resting caloric needs) using MedGem technology, which will assess your resting metabolic rate (RMR) to allow us to accurately determine your daily energy needs.

Then we'll measure your body composition using the BOD POD Body Composition Tracking System, which uses patented air displacement technology to render highly accurate results safely and quickly. We may also use a GE Lunar Prodigy DXA, a testing device that measures body composition with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. This device can look beyond weight and the traditional body mass index to determine your body fat distribution, lean tissue mass, and bone mineral content.

As you lose weight, we'll monitor your progress using the same technology.

Using science for truly effective weight loss

Research shows that a comprehensive approach to a healthy lifestyle, fitness, and nutrition leads to more successful weight loss and weight management over time. Because we'll begin your weight loss plan by assessing your overall health and factors affecting your weight, our clinical support team will be better prepared to guide you down the road to successful long term weight loss.

Safe, natural weight management

Based on regular review of the latest information, we believe that just as with weight loss, a natural, nutritionally sound approach to weight management (maintaining your ideal weight once you've obtained it) is the best course. We'll continue to monitor your progress with the technology and tools at our disposal and support you as you keep the weight off.

Worse, recent studies show that about one-third of American adults already have abnormal glucose homostasis. The antidote?
