Natural treatment for changing hormone levels

Hormones affect a woman’s body in myriad ways, beginning even before birth. And as women age, hormone levels naturally decrease, causing the symptoms associated with menopause and affecting many other areas of the body and mind.

For instance, as they age many women experience an increase in abdominal fat due to a loss of estrogen, which has also been shown to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. Estrogen is important to women because it can reduce plaque in the brain, lowering the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease. Estrogen can also decrease the risk of colorectal cancer, cataracts, and macular degeneration, among other diseases.

After discovering that synthetic estrogen and progestins had been found to dramatically increase the risk of breast cancer, though, many women became understandably cautious about hormone replacement therapy. However, in 2007, Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, a journal focusing on the treatment of breast cancer and related investigations, reported that unlike synthetic estrogen and progestins, the use of natural hormones does not increase breast cancer risk.

  • Estrogen protects. A 1998 Clinical Genetics article noted estrogen protects against neuron- degeneration, changes in mood, cognition and behavior. And a 2001 Consultant article said estrogen protects bone, heart, brain, blood vessels, urogenital tissue, eyes... and in many cases, life itself.
  • Estrogen does not increase one’s cancer risk. In 2004 the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that a powerful study showed increased risk is associated only with taking progestin, not estrogen.

  • A study reported in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism concluded that twelve months of growth hormone (GH) replacement improved lipid profile and cardiac performance in adult growth hormone deficient (GHD) patients. A similar period of GH deprivation caused a further impairment of lipid profile and cardiac performance. This finding strongly supports the need of GH replacement in adult GHD patients.
